Built From the Right Material for the Job
Fitted furniture is only as good as what it is made from. The choice changes the look, the cost and how it ages — so it is worth understanding before you decide.
Hand-Painted Timber & MDF
The traditional choice for alcove units and wardrobes, and the most flexible on colour — it can be matched to your walls exactly, or repainted in a few years when you change the room. Sprayed or hand-finished depending on the effect you want.
Birch Plywood
Left exposed, with its layered edge on show, birch ply gives a clean modern look that has become genuinely popular in the last few years. It is strong, stable, and works particularly well for desks, media units and children's furniture.
Solid Oak & Walnut
Where the timber itself is the point — window sills, shelving, worktops and furniture tops. It costs more and moves slightly with the seasons, which we allow for in the construction, but nothing else has the same depth of grain.
Veneered & Laminate Board
A practical middle ground for large runs of storage where budget matters. Modern veneers and laminates are convincing and extremely durable, and pair well with a few solid timber details where they will actually be noticed.

Where Fitted Furniture Earns Its Keep
Some rooms benefit far more than others. These are the ones where built-in almost always beats freestanding.
Bedrooms
Fitted wardrobes recover the dead space a freestanding unit leaves above and beside it, and they can follow a sloped ceiling or chimney breast that no shop-bought wardrobe will ever fit. Internals are configured around what you actually own.
Living Rooms
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are the classic opportunity — cupboards below, shelving above, cabling hidden entirely. It is the change that most often makes a room look properly finished rather than furnished.
Home Offices & Studies
A desk built into the room at the right height, with shelving and storage above it, uses a fraction of the space a freestanding desk and bookcase would. Particularly effective in box rooms and on landings.
Hallways & Under-Stairs
Usually the most wasted space in the house. Pull-out shoe and coat storage, a bench with boot storage beneath, or simply a run of cupboards turns a corridor into something that takes the daily load off the rest of the house.

Fitted Furniture Questions We Are Asked Most
Is fitted furniture more expensive than buying freestanding?
Per item, usually yes. Per unit of usable storage, often not — a fitted wardrobe that runs floor to ceiling and wall to wall holds considerably more than a freestanding one occupying the same floor area. It also stays with the house and tends to add more value than furniture you take with you.
Can you build around sloped ceilings and awkward corners?
That is precisely where made-to-measure earns its money. Loft rooms, eaves, chimney breasts and under-stairs voids are all spaces where nothing off the shelf will ever fit properly, and where a built-in solution can reclaim a surprising amount of room.
How much disruption should I expect?
Less than most people fear. As much as possible is prepared off site, so the work in your home is mostly fitting and finishing rather than construction. We contain the dust, work in one area at a time where we can, and clear up properly at the end of each day.
Can you match existing furniture or woodwork?
Usually. Paint can be colour-matched, and skirting and architrave profiles can be matched or reproduced so new work does not announce itself. If an exact match is not achievable — which occasionally happens with older timber — we will say so rather than get halfway and hope.
Do you take on small jobs, or only whole rooms?
Both. A single set of alcove shelves, one run of wardrobes, or a full house of storage and new internal doors are all normal work for us. It is worth asking regardless of scale.
Do you cover my area?
We work across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex — including Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Saffron Walden and Haverhill. Slightly further afield is often still workable, so do ask.
